Here's What to Do When Your Furnace Won't Ignite

February 23, 2017

We are getting through the last few weeks of winter but we still need our furnaces, especially during frigid nights. There’s not a lot that is worse than turning in at night and realizing your furnace won’t kick on. If you find yourself in this situation, here are some things you can check yourself before your call Roland J. Down Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning.

Check Air Filters

You should replace standard air filters every 30 days. If you do not, they can become clogged, blocking air flow and resulting in your furnace malfunctioning.

Check Your Thermostat

See if turning the temperature up a few degrees will get the furnace to turn on. If the actual room temperature is higher than the thermostat, the furnace won’t kick on. Also, confirm the system switch is on “heat” or “auto.”

Check the Power

It may seem ridiculous, but confirm the power switch next to the furnace is “On.” Even gas heating equipment uses electricity so make sure the breaker has not tripped and that the power switch has not been accidently flipped to the “Off” position.

If you check all these things and your furnace will still not start up, give Roland J. Down Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning a call at 518-417-2938 and we’ll come out and get you taken care of as soon as possible.
