How to Prepare Your Albany Home for Air Conditioning Installation

May 07, 2015

So you’ve decided it’s time to upgrade your existing air conditioning system to a more energy efficient system. Great choice! You’re making a long-term investment in your family’s comfort as well as the decreasing of your energy costs and responsible consumption of energy. While those are all great things there are still a few more things you can do to prep your Albany home before you start the air conditioning installation process.

1. Review the Manual J Heating and Cooling Load

First of all, the AC contractor should have done what’s called a heating and cooling load calculation. This complex calculation takes into account the home’s structure, roof, windows, direction and location to decide the size and type of equipment needed. Ask to see the load calculation and have it explained to you. If the contractor did what’s commonly referenced as a Block Assessment, or did not complete a load calculation at all, we would strongly recommend selecting another contractor or calling Roland J. Down Service Experts at 518-417-2938. Your Albany HVAC specialist will be able to offer you a full assessment.

2. Clean and Seal Ducts.

Next, have the company clean your ductwork. It’s not a good idea to introduce caked on dirt and dust from a very old duct system to your brand new air conditioning system. The health of your entire system and the quality of the air you breathe kicks off with your ducts delivering clean air, so make sure that they are cleaned and appropriately sealed by the HVAC contractor. If you can’t remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned or have never had them cleaned, have the contractor do a duct cleaning before your new AC installation.

3. Clear a Path.

Prior to the air conditioner installation you will also want to clear the area where equipment will be installed, and ensure it is easy to access. There are stairs, landscaping porches, decks or other things surrounding the AC, clear the area as much as you can. Make certain the area is clear of yard waste like big sticks and leaf piles so installation is even simpler. Also make sure to clear away anything else that could get in your installation expert’s way such as garden hoses, rakes, or children’s toys. Make sure pets are caged so they do not get in the way of the installation crew.
