The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that gives financial support to those in the construction trade who endured life-altering injuries. Every year the Foundation honors various recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, born in Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil endured a massive stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and the experience left his left leg severely impaired, resulting in foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors feared that he would ultimately end up confined to a wheelchair.
Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, causing financial tension on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, an apparatus that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help someone with foot drop walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they were not able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the intensive rehab that would be needed so he could understand how to use it.
Fortunately, a specialist at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
